The Danube River

The Beautiful Blue Danube

Photo Galleries | Sample Itineraries

From its humble origins in the Swabian Alb area of southwest Bavaria, to the river’s diverse delta region where it flows into the Black Sea in southeast Romania, the Danube River conjures up genuine feelings and emotions of romance, beauty, mystery and intrigue.

For many years, especially during the Cold War era, the Danube River’s memory belonged primarily to Austria and Germany. The Danube was associated with the classical music waltz, the city of Vienna (where eastern and western Europe meet), along with the medieval villages and monasteries of western Austria. Since 1989, and the subsequent dismantling of the Soviet-era empire, a whole new region of Europe has suddenly opened up to Western tourists. Countries like; Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Romania and Bulgaria are now fair game for foreign visitors. And what better way to visit these developing countries where language, services and western hotel standards are often an issue, than to view them from the comfort, safety and security of a European river cruise ship.
